“So Says the Drum” is a project by the Cologne-based artists of Brazilian origin Bella Comsom and Bruna Cabral – a tribute to the drum as an ancient technology and a coded language. In Brazilian culture, percussion becomes the grammar of silence, pulse and resistance.
The project explores drumming beyond its musical function, understanding it as a medium of communication, collective memory, and spiritual, healing and political forces. The live performance combines ritual, improvisation and technological experimentation, opening up new forms of transmedia sound art.
I met @thebrunacabral in Cologne shortly after arriving here. Little by little, we started playing together and building this partnership.
Brazil never leaves us, and thankfully so. I carry a deep longing for it, and also a deep pride in our cultural richness. Bruna, born in Belém and living here for many years now, carried that same longing too. Sometimes I think I came all the way from there just to meet her here.
The drums are what speak through my body. Through them, I activate these electronic circuits to which I dedicate so many hours of my life. There’s a contradiction between the technical nature of this work and the deeply physical relationship I have with these instruments and machines.
Besides a new live show this year, there’s also an album coming.
We’ll slowly reveal what’s on the way.
